MUMBAI: The Pune Police has not found any links to suggest that an engineering student who indulged in a hate tweet was a member of BJP. Amitesh Singh Kate, a 20-year-old engineering student, was in the news after he tweeted, “kill at least 3,000 Muslims tomorrow”, which was followed by calls for action against him.

“Senior police officials have been interrogating him; he is not a member of BJP or any other party. He has just made the claims,” said Pune police commissioner KK Pathak. Kate, who went by the name AmiteshsinghBJP in his twitter account, claimed to be a Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha member in Pune. He also boasted in his twitter account that Prime Minister Narendra Modi followed him on Twitter.

Kate was arrested on Wednesday following a furore over his tweets. Though Kate deleted his tweets and even shut his account, the Bund Garden police managed to trace him thorough his IP address. Pathak is a resident of Bibvewadi in Pune, said police officials. During interrogation he claimed that he was ‘agitated’ after watching video clips on the net that showed the Godhra train burning incident.
