Amid reports of rising unemployment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that he has issued instructions to all departments and ministries to recruit a million workers in the next 18 months. Modi reviewed the status of human resources in all government departments and ministries before he instructed that the recruitment be done in 'mission mode' in one-and-a-half years.

Information and broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur said after a Cabinet meeting that all ministries have already begun the process by holding meetings with officials so that the target can be achieved at the earliest. More details of which ministry was going to provide how many government jobs will be announced in the coming days.

Education and skill development minister Dharmendra Pradhan welcomed Modi's announcement as a "people-centric decision that will further strengthen the employment scenario and bring a lot of cheer and optimism for India's youth. Taking forward PM's decision to recruit 10 lakh people in all government departments and ministries in mission mode..." He said the skill development ministry was committed to fill-up all vacancies in their respective departments in the next 1.5 years. "Accountability, people-centric governance and meeting targets before deadline is a hallmark of PM Narendra Modi's government. All vacant teaching and non-teaching posts in HEIs, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas and other departments will be filled up at the earliest."
