West Bengal Election Commission on Monday announced dates of four municipal bodies. The Commission has informed the Calcutta High Court that the civic body election will be held on January 22, 2022 and would include five municipal bodies of Chandannagar, Bidhannagar, Siliguri and Asansol.

“The civic polls of the four municipalities will be on January 22 and the counting will be on January 25. Election Model Code of Conduct has been implemented from Monday. The candidates can file their nomination from tomorrow and the last date of filing nomination will be January 3,” State Election Commissioner Saurav Das said.

The State Election Commissioner (SEC) said all the polling booths will be under CCTV surveillance like the KMC polls. Whether central force or Bengal Police will be deployed will be decided on January 4 after the security related meeting, he added.

The SEC had convened an all-party meeting on Monday. Both BJP and the Left Front left the meeting midway, claiming the State Election Commission is working in tandem with the state government.

“The SEC said that the old voter list will be used. The young voters will not be able to participate in the polls. We have requested the Commission to ensure that those who turn 18 can vote this time,” said BJP leaders Shishir Bajoria.

Ahead of civic body polls in different municipal bodies in Bengal, defection has started again with BJP Jalpaiguri vice-president rejoined Trinamool Congress.
