Elections 2014 Results: Two key takeaways from Uttar Pradesh
Rahul Gandhi trailing, Smriti Irani leading, BJP riding in UP, SP and BSP faring poorly. If all of these trends hold -- and it looks like they will -- here's UP's message.

1. Congress wants to keep Rahul Gandhi in, people want to keep Rahul Gandhi out: Look at Amethi, Congress, the pocket borough is revolting. That tells you something. If you want to get back in the game, change your leader.

2. Caste stranglehold breaks: UP is supposed to be all about caste. All of us pontificated about how BJP may have got its caste calculus wrong, that development message won't get you that many votes. But it has. Otherwise how do you explain SP's and BSP's poor performance? This is brilliant news for India. If UP cast its vote for development and not vote its caste, politics can change dramatically.
