Election near, WB ministers asked to push projects

CPM leadership in West Bengal did a preliminary assessment of some of its ministers on Monday in the presence of chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and state commerce & industry minister Nirupam Sen.

KOLKATA: With an eye on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the CPM leadership in West Bengal did a preliminary assessment of some of its ministers on Monday in the presence of chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and state commerce & industry minister Nirupam Sen. For one, they asked the ministers to expedite the utilisation of central funds and complete work on ongoing development projects by March 31.

The state CPM leadership will review the progress of central funds utilisation after March 31. It is learnt that the party leadership is also miffed with the state governments paltry 22% success rate (till January 23, 2009) in implementing the mega central project National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme in West Bengal.

The CPM leadership has also urged its ministers in the Buddhadeb government to ensure 100% implementation of the Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY) a JV between the Centre and state governments to improve living conditions of slum dwellers by providing pucca houses.

The state CPM leadership has also noted that funds for tribal development remained unused in the districts of Purulia, Bankura, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and West Midnapore. The leadership has also asked the Pascimaanchal Unnayal Parshad to hasten the process of using central funds for tribal population in the state.

By holding meetings with party ministers and assessing their performance, the CPM leadership is trying to plug prevailing loopholes in the state government in implementing projects meant for the backward class and tribals before the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The move is also being seen as a damage control exercise after the CPM got a dent in the districts of East Midnapore, South 24-Parganas and some pockets of North 24-Parganas and Nadia during the panchayat elections held in May 2008.
