Election Commission notice to Verma for sub-quota remark

The EC, which went through tapes of Verma's speech, said the model code of conduct required parties not to make appeal to caste or communal feelings for securing votes.

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Saturday slapped a notice on Union steel minister Beni Prasad Verma for his recent remarks on minority sub-quota, stating that he had violated the model code of conduct by seeking votes through communal appeals.

The panel said that Verma had violated the poll code “deliberately and willfully”. At a rally in Farukkhbad earlier this week, Verma had promised that “reservation of Muslims will be increased” and dared the EC to issue a notice in case his statement violated of the model code of conduct.

The EC, which went through tapes of Verma’s speech, said the model code of conduct required parties not to make appeal to caste or communal feelings for securing votes.

It further argued that the party in power could not use its official position for the purpose of its election campaign, and that the poll code barred ministers from announcing financial grants or promises to voters.
