Election Commission cautions state minister for violating model code

Though the ECI observed that Veeramani had violated the MCC by visiting the district in his official vehicle, it took a lenient view since he had not carried out any political activity in the district.

CHENNAI: The Election Commission has warned state Minister K C Veeramani for violating the Model Code of Conduct, presently in place in Salem district ahead of the December 4 Yercaud bypoll.

Though the ECI observed that Veeramani had violated the MCC by visiting the district in his official vehicle, it took a lenient view since he had not carried out any political activity in the district.

Hence, the Commission has taken a lenient view and decided to caution Veeramani to be careful in future so that such instances do not recur, the Chief Electoral Officer said in a statement.

Veeramani was yesterday divested of the health portfolio and Dr C Vijayabaskar inducted in his place.

He has been assigned portfolios of School Education, Archaeology, Sports and Youth Welfare, Tamil Official Language and Tamil culture.
