CHENNAI: Election authorities have seized Rs 1.73 crore cash besides 1,041 grams of gold and registered 51 cases for alleged electoral offences in Tamil Nadu since the model code of conduct came into force for the May 16 assembly elections.

Cash seizures ranging from Rs three lakh to Rs 10 lakh were made in several districts, including Nagapattinam, Nilgiris, Krishnagiri, and Virudhunagar, an official release said here today.

Also, 1,041 grams of gold jewellery was seized in Tiruchirappalli district and its value was not included in the cash seizure.

While flying squads had seized Rs.1,17,02,660 crore, Static Surveillance Teams impounded Rs 56 lakh. Some merchandise like marriage bags (thamboola paigal) were also seized.

Flying squads and surveillance teams comprise officials drawn from various government departments, including revenue. In all cases involving seizures, there was no proper documents or evidence to prove it was for bonafide use, the release said.

As many as 51 cases have been filed in various districts for alleged electoral offences. Such cases include election campaign at Cumbum in Theni district without permission, advertisement in government stationery without nod from competent authorities.
