The Election Commission announced on Thursday the commencement of Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha bypoll on November 12.

The bypolls came following the resignation of L Murugan from the Union council of ministers and the Rajya Sabha on October 14. He was minister of state for parliamentary affairs and information and broadcasting.

Murugan’s term was due to end on April 2, 2030.

During resignation, the BJP politician said he wanted to focus on strengthening his party in Tamil Nadu.

Members of state legislative assemblies elect Rajya Sabha members and procedure dictates counting to occur on the same evening after conclusion of voting.
