AGRA: Former Army Chief General V K Singh today called on ex-servicemen to act as a vote bank and elect a "strong and committed" government at the Centre in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Speaking at a convention of ex-servicemen here, the former army chief called for a strong foreign police so that frequent incursions on the border could be prevented.

He said, while the political parties divided the country, ex-servicemen should stay united and act as a vote bank so that their voice could be heard and grievances redressed.

At present there were as many as 307 different bodies of ex-servicemen, General (Retd.) Singh said, adding that "they should unite and present a united front".

He called on ex-servicemen and others to elect good and committed candidates to bring in a strong government at the Centre. "There is an urgent need for commitment to the country," he said.

General (Retd.) Sing regretted the fact that their was no memorial for soldiers other than the one at the India Gate, which had been put up by the British.
