Elders concerned about Reliance closing petrol pumps

Reliance Industries' decision to shut down about two-thirds of its petrol pumps in the country due to continued losses today came up in the Rajya Sabha with some members demanding action against the private firm.

NEW DELHI: Reliance Industries' decision to shut down about two-thirds of its petrol pumps in the country due to continued losses today came up in the Rajya Sabha with some members demanding action against the private firm.

Raising a supplementary on an original question pertaining to capital investment by oil companies in foreign countries, Digvijay Singh (JD-U) said youths were being driven to suicide after closure of petrol pumps by the firm.

Without naming Reliance, he sought to know what action the Government proposed to take against the firm for "depriving" the youths, who had invested Rs two to three crore in the petrol pumps, of their livelihood.

He was joined by SP members, notably Shahid Siddiqui and Virendra Bhatia, even as Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dinsha Patel said the supplementary raised did not pertain to the original question asked.

Patel said the Government had in 1998 opened up the oil sector beginning with refineries.

Private and foreign firms were allowed into fuel retailing after they invested Rs 2000 crore in oil infrastructure projects like refineries, oil and gas exploration, LNG terminals and pipelines.

Private companies made investment based on their business prudence, he said.
