NEW DELHI: The plight of 40,000 Indians stranded in the UAE and other gulf countries was taken up in the Rajya Sabha on friday with members making a strong demand to make arrangements for their safe return.

Raising the matter during Zero Hour, R Chandrasekar Reddy (TDP) said that with the deadline of leaving the country by November two expiring, the Indians were facing hardships in the absence of valid travel documents.

"The Government should act on humanitarian grounds," he said. Reddy demanded that a charted flight should be sent from India to ferry them back. He also drew the attention of the government towards six people convicted by a Sharjah court, two of whom faced death sentence. The TDP member was joined by SP members and some others.
