Egypt crisis: Death toll from anti-government protests crosses 100, says security source

CAIRO: At least 102 people have been killed -- 33 on Saturday alone -- in five days of anti-government unrest in Egypt, security and medical sources said on Sunday.

Ten more deaths were reported around the town of Beni Sueif, 140 kilometres (85 miles) south of Cairo, bringing the toll there to 22 after protesters tried to burn down a police station, witnesses said.

An earlier overall toll said that 92 people had died since protests erupted on Tuesday.

Three other people were killed Saturday in Cairo, three in Rafah on the border with Gaza, and five in Ismailia, on the west bank of the Suez Canal.

On Friday, 62 people were killed, including 35 in Cairo, in the deadliest day of protests calling for regime change in the Arab world's most populous country.

Seven people were killed between Tuesday and Wednesday in Cairo and the canal city of Suez, amid unprecedented protests demanding the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak.

Several thousands have been reported injured this week.
