“Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) should endeavour to create opportunities in the engineering sector in West Bengal.

KOLKATA: “Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) should endeavour to create opportunities in the engineering sector in West Bengal. This is ex-pected from the council to drive growth in the sector and enhance oppor-tunities in employment generation in the state,” said Nirupam Sen, minister of commerce and industries, West Bengal.

He was addressing reporters after launching a monthly journal brought out by EEPC on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, EEPC chairman Rakesh Shah said “EEPC has decided to bring out a journal on the engineering goods sector every month, giving latest information on current trends on happenings in engi-neering industry in the country and at the world level”.

Engineering goods export crossed $5 billion in the first quarter of 2006-07. For the entire year, the export target is set at $23 billion against last financial year’s actual exports of $20.2 billion. Employment in the export-oriented engineering sector has increased 92% over the last five years. With this, 7% of total employment is being generated by the export-oriented engineering units, said Mr Shah.
