GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said education was his government's priority and adequate importance was being given to it.

"Education is our priority and we are giving adequate importance to it, including resolving the problems of teaching and non-teaching staff of educational institutions," Gogoi said while distributing pension payment orders (PPOs) to 703 teaching and non-teaching staff of the provincialised educational institutions here.

He said when the present government took office in 2001, salaries of the teaching and non-teaching fraternity were not regular but "Timely intervention of the present government ensured that their salaries and other benefits were regularised."

The state government was committed to setting up of model schools and development of infrastructure in the education sector as this would lead to development of the state, he said.

Gogoi called for cooperation of all sections, specially the teaching the non-teaching fraternity, in the government's endeavour to use education as the road towards prosperity and progress of the state.

He also said his government has taken steps to ensure that pension holders get their benefits on time.
