Coal scam case: ED summons Abhishek Banerjee

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday summoned West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Narula to New Delhi, with their bank details, in connection with a money laundering case allegedly linked to a multi-crore coal scam in West Bengal.

While Abhishek Banerjee, who is national general secretary of the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), has been called on September 6, his wife has been summoned on September 1, said people aware of the matter.

“It is a politically motivated move and ploy against Abhishek Banerjee, aimed at tarnishing his image. The BJP is resorting to politics of revenge. The people of Bengal will give a befitting reply for this to the BJP,” AITC secretary general Partha Chatterjee said in Kolkata on Saturday. “This is a ploy of the BJP to tarnish the image of Trinamool and national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee.”


The ED had filed a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after examining a first information report (FIR) lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in November 2020 against Banerjee and his wife over alleged multi-crore money laundering in coalfields near Asansol.

The FIR was lodged in an alleged scam related to the Eastern Coalfields mines in the Kunustoria and Kajora areas near Asansol.
