New Delhi: The government has initiated a ‘preliminary enquiry’ against Enforcement Directorate officer Rajeshwar Singh on allegation of disproportionate assets.

The enquiry is being conducted by the department of revenue.

The Supreme Court had on June 27 allowed the government to investigate allegations of disproportionate assets against Singh who was probing Aircel-Maxis and 2G spectrum case.

Singh is known to be close to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director Alok Kumar Verma, who has been asked to go on leave following recommendations of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).

CBI special director Rakesh Asthana, too, has been divested of his duties as he is facing an internal probe for allegedly running an extortion racket. After the infighting in CBI, the spotlight is now on the premier economic intelligence agency. Current Enforcement Directorate (ED) head, Indian Police Service officer Karnal Singh’s term ends on Friday, and government sources say he is unlikely to get an extension.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said he will withdraw from all cases filed against former finance minister P Chidambaram if Rajeshwar Singh is removed.

"In today's situation, ED officer Rajeshwar, if he is removed, then I will come to the conclusion that a conspiracy is going on to save Chidambaram,” PTI quoted Swamy as saying in Ahmedabad on Thursday. “There are many well-wishers of Chidambaram in our party who are trying to save him,” he alleged.

“I will withdraw myself from all the cases filed against Chidambaram in the Supreme Court, cases filed against Sonia and Rahul Gandhi in Patiala House (court) in the National Herald (case) and the case against Shashi Tharoor in the (alleged) murder of his wife,” Swami said.
