Assembly polls are likely early next year. Meanwhile process is on for delimitation of parliamentary and Assembly constituencies of Assam.
The commission was constituted on March 6 by the Centre for the delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Jammu and Kashmir.
The delimitation exercise in Assam has been on hold since 2008. In 2007, all parties had petitioned the then Union home minister Shivraj Patil, saying that since there was a law and order situation and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise could not be completed, the state cannot go ahead with the delimitation exercise.
