EC files cases against Jayalalithaa
EC files cases against AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa for false declarations during 2001 assembly polls.

CHENNAI: Nearly a month after the direction of the Madras High Court, the Election Commission (EC) on Monday filed cases against AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa for filing false declarations in four constituencies during the 2001 assembly polls.
Following a direction by the EC, the polling officers in Pudukottai and Bhuvanagiri where Jayalalithaa filed nomination papers in addition to Andipatti and Krishnagiri, today filed petitions at Magistrate courts under 125-A (ii) of the Representation of the People's Act.
While Pudukottai polling officer Mohan filed a petition in Pudukottai judicial magistrate court, Bhuvanagiri polling officer Selvamani filed a case at a court in Chidambaram.
The Madras High Court, in its June 13 order, held that prima facie there was sufficient material on record to take action against Jayalalithaa for filing false declaration before the electoral authorities.
Hearing a petition by DMK MP C Kuppusamy, it directed the Election Commission of India to initiate action against her in accordance with the law within six weeks, under Section 125-A(ii) of the Representation of the People Act.
Kuppusamy had alleged that Jayalalithaa had suppressed information, that she had filed papers from four constituencies.
