Ahead of assembly polls in some key states later this year, the Election Commission has convened a high level meeting of all state poll officials on Thursday to chalk out strategies for ensuring free and fair voting.

New Delhi: Ahead of assembly polls in some key states later this year, the Election Commission has convened a high level meeting of all state poll officials on Thursday to chalk out strategies for ensuring free and fair voting.

Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami and the other two Election Commissioners Navin Chawla and S Y Quraishi would review the entire gamut of issues with Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all states and union territories.

Focus would be given to reviewing of photo electoral rolls to eliminate bogus voters.

"The exercise is to ensure that the electoral rolls are clean. Eligible persons should not deleted from the list while illegal ones should be removed," Gopalaswami said earlier.

Observing that the electoral rolls were crucial, the CEC said that the EC should monitor the exercise closely.

The meeting is also expected to deliberate considerably on the delimitation of constituencies in the backdrop of Union Cabinet's decision that the next elections will be held in constituencies redrawn by the delimitation exercise.

However, the exercise has been deferred in Jharkhand and four north eastern states -- Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
