THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala may be aiming to position itself at the top of the tourism destinations in the country, but when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh makes a scheduled visit here on November 1 to mark the Kerala formation day, it would be anything but a holiday ambience. An e-mail threat to the life of the prime minister and that of President APJ Abdul Kalam has raised security concerns in the state, with the state home minister calling a meeting of top police and home department officials at the capital. The e-mail says that the prime minister would be killed during his visit on November 1.

State director-general of police Ramon Srivastava confirmed that the e-mail had been sent from a cyber cafe in Kochi. “It was a short message, which issued a threat to the PM’s life and spelt out a plan to target the president when he make his next visit to Kerala,” he said.

The DGP did not confirm reports that the e-mail had emanated from the ID, ‘SIMI-Kottayam’, but said the mail did mentions the causes of People’s Democratic Party chief Abdul Nassar Madani, who is languishing in jail for the Coimbatore blasts case and that of Afzal Guru, convicted in the Parliament attack case.

Three persons have been taken into custody following the incident, including the owner of the cyber cafe. Mr Srivastava said the threatening mail had been sent from a single e-mail ID to multiple addresses, including a number of senior police officials in the state.

He said the PMO had not yet contacted his office, adding that the state police was in touch with central agencies updating the latter regarding the threat. The state administration has reason to worry over the e-mail threat, given the series of country bomb blasts across the state, some of which have caused serious injury to those making the bombs.

Defence minister A K Antony is expected to accompany the prime minister on his visit during the golden jubilee celebrations of Kerala’s formation day.
