e-challans are here, around 3,000 people fined everyday

NEW DELHI: The much talked about e-challan project of Delhi Police has finally rolled out with around 3,000 people being fined everyday by traffic police personnel using a hand-held digital device.

According to Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla, the project has started on a trial basis and its formal announcement will be made soon.

"A total of 22,39 e-challans were issued to the traffic offenders yesterday alone. Currently, we are using 1200 handheld devices in five ranges of Delhi. The project is in its technical evaluation stage and everyday around 3000 to 3500 e-challans are issued," said Shukla.

Out of the 22,39 e-challans issued yesterday, the maximum came from South range with 831. The West range witnessed 495, Central range 449, North range 328 and 136 people were fined electronically in the East range, he said.

The handheld device of e-challan will replace the challan book used by traffic police personnel. The e-challan will be issued on the spot with this device. The new project will also help traffic police to identify repeat offenders as every device will be linked to a central server.

Shukla said that the traffic police have also entered into a tie up with State Bank of India. Now, an e-gateway facility has also been added to the e-challan so that one can even pay his or her fine through a Credit or Debit Card.
