NEW DELHI: Activists of CPI(M)'s youth wing DYFI today staged demonstrations in front of nationalised banks and branches of RBI across the country, opposing an RBI circular permitting banks to re-employ retired officials and contractualisation of banking services.

The activists staged sit-ins and demonstrations across the country besides faxing a memorandum to Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram and RBI Governor Y V Reddy protesting an RBI circular permitting banks to engage retired employees and ex-servicemen in banking services.

The protesters demanded that existing "three lakh" vacancies in nationalised banks be filled through "proper process".

They alleged that the RBI move to allow banks to engage retired personnel and contractualise its services was an anti- employment move.

DYFI president P Sreeramakrishnan claimed the campaign evoked a "good response" across the country.

He said in West Bengal, Kerala, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, protests were organised at district and tehsil levels.
