Doubtful voters can make it to NRC only if names cleared by foreigners’ tribunal

There are around 1.20 lakh doubtful voters. D-voter tag was first used during the preparation of electoral rolls in 1997.

GUWAHATI: Doubtful voters also known as D-voter can make it to National Register of Citizens (NRC) only after their names are cleared by foreigners’ tribunal.

An official in NRC , who do not want to be named told ET, “ The Supreme Court in its recent order while hearing the case Abdul Kuddus has clarified that doubtful voters name can make it to NRC only after it is cleared by the foreigners tribunal.”

There are around 1.20 lakh doubtful voters. D-voter tag was first used during the preparation of electoral rolls in 1997.


Doubtful voter’, is a category of voters in Assam who are disenfranchised for lack of citizenship credentials and barred from contesting elections and casting their votes.

In July last year, final draft of NRC was published and around 40 lakh people were not included in the draft. Around 36.28 lakh have claimed for inclusion and 2 lakh people have registered their objections. Supreme court monitored final NRC is expected by published by July 31, this year.
