Don't take political mileage from rape incidents: Congress to Opposition
NEW DELHI: Facing flak over rising incidents of rapes in Delhi, Congress today asked opposition parties to channelise public outrage to bring about zero-tolerance towards such crimes, instead of trying to earn "political brownie points".

In the editorial of its mouthpiece ' Congress Sandesh', the party also had advice for the police, whose role after the recent rape of a minor in east Delhi, has come into sharp criticism.

"Proper implementation of law and order is the responsibility of the agency created for doing the same, which is the police. Police needs to be sensitised further to act fast when reports of such incidents come before it," the party journal said.

It rued that even the public outrage after the December 16 Delhi gangrape has not stopped perverts from committing such acts of extreme violence against women.

"Repetitive heinous acts of brutal rape all over the country on women and girl of tender age are extremely perturbing.

"Political parties, instead of trying to earn political brownie points, would be well advised to channelise this public outrage to bring about awareness and to bring about a zero-tolerance towards the people, who indulge in such brutal acts of violence and crime against women," it said.

The party also noted that tough laws are important "but laws alone have not been able to stop crime anywhere in the world", and called for public alertness to stop "debased" individuals from getting away with such dastardly acts.
