Don't pick Hillary for VP, Carter tells Obama
Barack Obama, the Democratic Party nominee for the White House race, would make the "worst mistake" if he chose Hillary Clinton as running mate, former US president Jimmy Carter said.

LONDON: Barack Obama, the Democratic Party nominee for the White House race, would make the "worst mistake" if he chose Hillary Clinton as running mate, former US president Jimmy Carter said Wednesday.
Naming the New York senator as his vice-presidential nominee "would be the worst mistake that could be made" Carter told The Guardian on its website. "That would just accumulate the negative aspects of both candidates."
Carter, Democrat president from 1977 to 1981, said he would also have been against Obama being vice-presidential nominee had Clinton been victorious in the marathon round of primaries for the presidential nomination.
"If you take that 50 percent who just don't want to vote for Clinton and add it to whatever element there might be who don't think Obama is white enough or old enough or experienced enough or because he's got a middle name that sounds Arab, you could have the worst of both worlds," he said.
Carter said he favoured "a person who can compensate for (Obama's) obvious potential defects, his youthfulness and his lack of long experience in military and international affairs".
He said he favoured the former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Sam Nunn.
"That would be my preference but there are other senior Democrats who would have similar credentials to Sam Nunn," he said.
The Guardian said its interview with Carter was recorded before Obama was confirmed as the Democrats' presumptive nominee. The full interview is to be published Saturday.
