The Coast Guard has told the state government that the police must improve the flow of intelligence exchange with them, and not have interactions only at the time of joint exercises.

The Coast Guard has told the state government that the police must improve the flow of intelligence exchange with them, and not have interactions only at the time of joint exercises.

On Tuesday, the Coast Guard took Home Minister RR Patil and Opposition leaders Eknath Khadse and Pandurang Phundkar into the sea off Mumbai. After a long debate in the Assembly, Patil had assured the Opposition that he would inspect anti-terror measures with the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard has demanded jetties for its ships at Mumbai Port Trust or Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. The force also asked for plots in Thane and Raigad districts to set up bases. The government had recently alloted its airport at Ratnagiri to the Coast Guard.

During the interaction with the state government , some Coast Guard officials unofficially told the delegation how diesel smuggling thrives in the harbours of Mumbai, Raigad and other coasts. They claim diesel is brought in tankers and sold at Rs 28 a litre to Indian smugglers , who sell it in the market.

Coast Guard officials also asked the state government to have separate lanes for fishing boats and have monitored landing points. The Coast Guard also said that the Fisheries Department needed to ensure that there was more discipline among those using fishing boats.
