Don't allow vehicles inside Cubbon Park, says Dult

Directorate of Urban Land Transport (Dult), an arm of the state government, has favoured closing Cubbon Park, the 200-acre lung space in the middle of Benglauru, for vehicular traffic, and for vehicle parking.

Dult commissioner V Manjula, in a letter to the Horticulture department, highlighted concerns expressed by citizen groups over the thinking in the government to reopen the sprawling lung space for vehicular traffic. Citizen groups, she said, have urged the Dult to flag their concerns at the government level, and take steps to keep the park free of traffic.

"Cubbon Park is a vast green space in the heart of the city and its pristine nature needs to be preserved. In various cities across the world, spaces in the city core are being reclaimed for the use of pedestrians and cyclists. Cubbon Park would be an ideal place to be reserved for pedestrians and cyclists in Bengaluru. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the Park as a shortcut for reaching their destinations. Closing of Cubbon Park to the use of motorized traffic will not cause any inconvenience as motorized traffic has alternative routes to reach their destinations," she said in her letter to Rajender Kataria, Secretary to Horticulture department.
