Dominican Republic president sworn in for 3rd term

President Leonel Fernandez of the Dominican Republic has been sworn in for a third term.

SANTO DOMINGO : President Leonel Fernandez of the Dominican Republic has been sworn in for a third term.

Fernandez coasted to re-election in May after two nonconsecutive terms as president amid economic booms in tourism and foreign investment.

He now contends with soaring food prices, a U.S. economic downturn and several costly projects, including a subway system in the capital.

Leaders from Latin America, Africa and Asia are attending Sunday's ceremony. Taiwan's new president, Ma Ying-jeou, is there as he works to strengthen relations with the shrinking list of countries that have diplomatic ties with Taiwan instead of rival China.
