Doing business with India is slower

"We look to knock down trade barriers and ensure that pro-growth policies are being adopted so that we are on a level playing field," said Assistant Secretary of Commerce David Bohigian told PTI.

Washington: As an American governmental and business delegation prepares to visit India, a senior Bush administration official has said doing business with New Delhi was slower due to regulations, despite a thaw in bilateral and trading relationship between the two countries.

"We look to knock down trade barriers and ensure that pro-growth policies are being adopted so that we are on a level playing field," said Assistant Secretary of Commerce David Bohigian told PTI. Bohigian and a private business delegation of 13 American companies are beginning their formal visit to India in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

All the companies in the American delegation are promoted by the Asia Pacific Partnership in Clean Development and Climate. "In India some of the challenges are certainly in the retail sector, opening up to multi-brand retailers and opening up investment.

We think both of those sectors benefit Indian consumer by being able to access more products," he said.

"Really the ability to conduct business in India is still slower because of regulations. So when I look at the overall relationship, it is positive. Our trading relationship is stronger than it has ever been," he said. "In the energy sector market based pricing is probably the key challenge," Bohigian said stressing that it is critical to ensure that various subsidies and other factors do not distort the market. "While opportunities are huge, there are obstacles," he said.
