Documentation centre at museum to preserve British era records

Railway Ministry allocated Rs. 2.6 crore for a documentation center that would preserve records of the Southern Railway from the British era.

TIRUCHIRAPALLI: Records of the Southern Railway dating to the British era can now be better preserved with the Railway Ministry allocating Rs 2.6 crore to set up a documentation centre at the railway museum here, a senior railway official said.

"The Railway Ministry has allocated Rs 2.6 crore to set up a documentation centre at Tiruchirapalli Railway Museum. This is expected to help preserve old documents and records dating to the British era," Goel, Divisional Railway Manager (Tiruchirapalli), said.

These documents provide a rare insight into the functioning of Railways in the pre-independence period and important milestones. Plans are also afoot to digitize them, he said.

The Railway Museum here, spread over five acres and the first in Southern Railway, is also home to vintage railway engines and more.

Close to 7,000 people have visited the museum since it was thrown open to the public last month, raking in sizeable revenue, he said.
