Docs retreat, techies join quota battle
Former IITians, software pros and engineers continue to rally against reservation.
Like-minded professionals formed a human chain outside the Electronic City campus on Hosur Road to pledge their solidarity against quota. The area is known as the most important software production and export zone in the entire country.
Organised by Youth for Equality , the rally saw a strength of 700 professionals. The participants said they will not object to the reservation policy if it is aimed at benefiting the poor of all sections .
IIT graduate Anup Varma, a member of Youth for Equality, explained the forum is opposed to reservation in its present form — 27 per cent for the OBCs. “What about poor Brahmins? They also don’t have access to education. And are all OBCs poor? Are all poor people OBCs? I think reservation should be based on economic criterion. The poor of all sections should benefit,” Varma said.
Responding to the point that OBCs along with Dalits constitute a majority of the population and that majority among them may not have had access to resources, education and employment, Anup said: “I agree that access is crucial . Everyone should have access . Where that access should be given is important. Is reservation the answer? The government should do something at the school level. We are also against discrimination and oppression. Only we would like the form in which it is being addressed changed,’’ he added.
