Do nothing that disrupts peace in Maldives: India to parties

NEW DELHI: Concerned at the recent reports indicating increased political tension in the Maldives, India has asked all political parties to exercise restraint and refrain from actions that might adversely impact peace and tranquility in the country.

The Ministry of External Affairs said India remains committed to extending "fullest" support to the Government of Maldives in its endeavour to engage the leaders of various political parties in resolving the current situation.

"We are concerned at the recent reports indicating increased political tension in the Maldives. The Government of India appeals to all political parties to exercise restraint and to refrain from actions that might adversely impact the atmosphere of peace and tranquility in the country," the official spokesperson in the MEA said, replying to a question.

He said India has been closely monitoring the situation in the Maldives following the transfer of power on February 7, 2012.

"We have noted that the Government of Maldives has constituted a Commission of National Inquiry, to look into the events surrounding the transfer of power in the Maldives in February 2012, which was later reconfigured by including a retired judge from Singapore as a Co-chair and a nominee of the former President of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed," the spokesperson said.
