DNA Profiling is used for disaster victim identification, investigation of crimes, identification of missing persons and human remains, and for medical research purposes.

In a report submitted to the government on Wednesday, the Law Commission headed by Justice (retd) BS Chauhan has recommended setting up of the Board.
DNA Profiling is used for disaster victim identification, investigation of crimes, identification of missing persons and human remains, and for medical research purposes.
The Board, a statutory body, should undertake functions such as laying down procedures and standards to establish DNA laboratories and granting accreditation to such laboratories, reads the report.
It further suggests that the Board shall be tasked with the mandate of advising the concerned ministries /departments of the Central and state governments on issues relating to DNA laboratories.
The Board shall also be responsible to supervise, monitor, inspect and assess the laboratories, reads the report.
The Board will frame guidelines for training of the Police and other investigating agencies dealing with DNA related matters.
It should advise on all ethical and human rights issues relating to DNA testing in consonance with global guidelines, the report recommends.
