DMK's TV dream closer to reality

Three companies, Videocon, Kitchen Appliances and Dixon Technologies, have won the orders to supply 30,000 colour television sets under Tamil Nadu government’s free colour television scheme.

CHENNAI: Three companies, Videocon, Kitchen Appliances and Dixon Technologies, have won the orders to supply 30,000 colour television sets under Tamil Nadu government’s free colour television scheme.

The global tender floated by the state government had evoked response from 10 consumer electronic companies.
The three companies would supply colour TVs for Rs 2,965 per set, local administration minister MK Stalin informed the state assembly on Friday. While Videocon would supply 15,000 sets, other two companies would supply 7,500 sets each, he said.

The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu had floated a global tender and 10 firms submitted their bids on July 24. Of these, Videocon Industries was the lowest bidder, quoting a rate of Rs 3,088.55 per TV, Mr Stalin said.

On further negotiations, all the selected firms agreed to reduce their bid to Rs 2,965 without compromising on the quality, while the others informed in writing that they could not offer TVs at such low rate, he added.

State Budget has made a provision of Rs 750 crore for the colour TV scheme.
