DMK women conference gets underway
The two-day DMK Women's wing conference, aimed at expanding its support among women, hitherto considered as the main vote bank of the rival AIADMK.

CUDDALORE-TN: The two-day DMK Women's wing conference, aimed at expanding its support among women, hitherto considered as the main vote bank of the rival AIADMK, commenced here today.
Senior party leader Vasanthy Ganesan unfurled the party flag in the presence of party chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and formally declare the conference open.
Women supporters of the party, from all parts of the state, converged in this small port town, where the party plans to take out a rally later today.
The conference assumes significance as it is being held in the Vanniyar heartland, the traditional vote bank of key ally PMK in the back drop of strained relationship between both the parties.
Karunanidhi had said yesterday that his party would review its ties with PMK in the light of threats allegedly made by a senior PMK leader against some DMK leaders. The PMK leader S Ramadoss hit back saying that Karunanidhi was attempting to portray PMK as violent party.
This is also first major political conference, where Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi would be addressing, after plunging in active politics last year.
The conference followed a similar meeting of youth brigade headed by Local Administration Minister and Karunanidhi's son M K Stalin in Thirunelveli last year.
Karunanidhi is scheduled to address the conference tomorrow.
