DMK softens stand on delimitation Bill, keeps options open ahead of Parliament debate

Chennai: The DMK on Friday said it will study the Bill on proposed delimitation, as and when it is tabled in Parliament, and take a decision based on what will be in the best interest of the people of Tamil Nadu.

This is being viewed as a softening of the party's stance at a time when the relationship with their long standing alliance partner, the Congress, has come under fire. The Congress walked out of the DMK-led alliance to join the TVK and helped the Vijay-led party form the government in the state. The DMK also subsequently exited the INDIA bloc at the national level.

A lot will depend on whether the proposed Bill will be a standalone legislation or part of a bundle of legislations, one party source ET spoke to said. He said that once the Bill's objectives are closely examined, the party will arrive at a decision. The key will be to have all their concerns addressed, he said.

On Thursday, former CM and DMK president MK Stalin held a discussion with DMK MPs online. The meeting resolved that the MPs would take a decision that does not reduce TN's strength in Parliament.
