CUDDALORE: Even as the UPA government faces opposition from some of its constituents over Women's Reservation Bill, another partner DMK on Sunday sought a consensus among all political parties for its early passage.
The DMK also defended its proposal to rename the stalled Sethusamudram project, saying it was aimed at its implementation.
A resolution adopted at its two-day women's conference said all political parties should help in smooth passage of the bill, introduced in the Rajya Sabha on the last day of the last session and referred to a select committee after opposition from some parties.
The party had been demanding 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures.
The conference also wanted 30 per cent reservation for women in central government jobs.
Another resolution urged the Centre for quick implementation of the Rs 2,400 crore Sethusamudram Shipping Canal project, facing roadblocks from pro-Hindu organisations opposed to the dredging of the Ramsethu (Adam's Bridge).

"We condemn those opposing the project in the name of Lord Ram, as it is aimed at the economic development of the state, promising mass employment," it said while stressing the centre for quick implementation of the project. Taking the centrestage at the conference, Kanimozhi, daughter of DMK president M Karunanidhi, in a veiled response to DMDK chief Vijaykant who had recently raised doubts about the party patriarch's atheist credentials in view of his offer to rename the project 'Sethuram', she said Karunanidhi only wanted the project for the development of the state and therefore even was ready to rename it.
