Delhi recorded a marginal improvement in ambient air quality this Diwali compared to last year, most likely owing to the noticeably lower levels of firecracker use, according to data released by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee.

Pollution levels as indicated by readings of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide showed values higher than the prescribed standards, in line with values observed during pre-Diwali weeks in the previous years.

Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment said DPCC data showed a “rapid build-up of pollution after 5 pm and very high peak levels during the night. Calm weather with nearly no wind blocked quick dispersal of smoke and pollutants”.

Pollution in residential areas, R K Puram, Punjabi Bagh, Mandir Marg and Civil Lines was higher than that recorded at the IGI Airport and Anand Vihar, the usual hotspots. ET takes a look...
