Disaster management authorities create awareness

GANGTOK: The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department conducted awareness and sensitization programme on disaster rescue for the officials and staff stationed in the Secretariat building today.

The programme was duly supported by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Kolkata.

The NDRF also displayed the basic tools and equipment which have been used during the disaster situation.

The NDRF has already started the awareness camps from June 17 in different parts of Sikkim to prepare people for any exigency.

Abhay Kumar Singh, Deputy Commandant said that ten battalions of NDRF were established in the country and the second battalion which was based in Kolkata has the area responsibility of the states of Sikkim, West Bengal and Jharkhand.

He said there were 18 sqaud teams deployed in the state and basically they were providing safety measures on pre-disaster like precaution, awareness and sensitization programme, during disaster and after disaster.

He further added that to lessen the crisis, one can definitely be better prepared and remain alert to face any natural calamity for minimizing losses and damages.

One minute silence was also observed in memory of those who lost their lives during the recent flash floods in Uttarakhand.
