COOCH BEHAR (WB): With controversy still on over who ordered Tuesday's firing at Dinhata that claimed the lives of five Forward Bloc supporters, Cooch Behar Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime) Meghlal Sarkar is being transferred.

Sarkar said he learnt of his transfer last night. He was being posted as PA to to IG (North Bengal) R J S Nalwa at Siliguri, he said.

Superintedent of Police Anil Kumar said he was yet to receive the official order of the transfer of the DSP (Crime).

Sarkar, who was on duty when the firing took place, said he had not ordered it, though he "justified" it.

"The firing was justified. If firing did not take place, over 100 policemen and the SDO of Dinhata may have died. But I did not order the firing," he said.

It was still to be officially ascertained whether it was the police or the CRPF which had opened fire.

Yesterday, Inspector General of CRPF Subhas Goswami denied in Kolkata that central force had opened fire.

Forward Bloc state secretary Ashok Ghosh had alleged on February six that the CRPF was in front of a police cordon and had fired "to kill and not injure". He also alleged that it was "pre-planned".

Cooch Behar district Forward Bloc secretary Udayan Guha alleged the DSP (Crime) was being made a scapegoat and demanded a high-level inquiry.
