Dilip Valse Patil convenes meeting on power crisis

Concerned over the growing shortfall of electricity, especially when drought-like conditions exist in the state, Maharashtra energy minister Dilip Valse Patil has convened a meeting.

MUMBAI: Concerned over the growing shortfall of electricity, especially when drought-like conditions exist in the state, Maharashtra energy minister Dilip Valse Patil has convened a meeting of representatives of trade and industry to seek their co-operation to tide over the crisis.

Sources in the state-run power generation company -Mahavitaran- said that even in the neighbouring Gujarat, "second staggering day" has been introduced in the industrial areas which means industrial units in the state go without power for two days.

"Whereas in Maharashtra, the load-shedding is for one day. The reason for giving this comparison is to explain that Maharashtra is not the only state grappling with power shortage," sources said.

Valse Patil, in the meeting to be held at Mantralaya, will appeal to the trade and industry representatives to go for more captive generation of power which will provide relief to the industrial units.

Recently, Mahavitaran increased the hours of power cuts in rural and urban areas. Sources said Mahavitaran was forced to do it because of lack of rains.

At present, big cities have six hours of load-shedding, semi-urban have eight hours and rural areas go without power for 13 hours.

The demand for electricity at present is 14,000 MW and the availability is only 9,300 MW. There is a shortfall of 4,500 to 4700 MW, sources added.
