Digvijay criticises Nitish for inadequate flood relief

Senior leader Digvijay Singh alleges Bihar govt to have failed in giving adequate relief to flood hit people.

PATNA: AICC General Secretary and in-charge of Bihar affairs Digvijay Singh has alleged that the state government had failed to provide adequate relief to flood hit people and charged Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with being insensitive to distribution of relief material.

After submitting a memorandum to Kumar about relief distribution among the flood victims, Singh told reporters here on Sunday that the chief minister should have cut short his Mauritius visit when the state was reeling under unprecedented floods.

He claimed that a sum of Rs 729 crore was lying with the state government under Calamity Relief Fund but in the absence of proper planning and management, the flood victims were not properly provided relief materials.

He clarified that despite the state government failing to submit the utilisation certificate in 2004, the Centre released Rs 350 crore annually to Calamity Relief Fund after relaxing the rules.

Singh said there was a set code for this fund under which there were provisions for reconstructing the houses, waiving of loans and cleaning of canals and district magistrates were provided with emergency fund but the state government did not pay any heed to this code as a result of relief distribution was hampered.
