Congress on Monday sought to downplay Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s unhappiness over being kept in the dark about joint operations in Lalgarh in West Bengal.
Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, who is also the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee chief, said that he would speak with Ms Banerjee. I will talk to Mamata Banerjee. If there is any misunderstanding, we will remove it through talks, Mr Mukherjee said in Jangipur. An angry Ms Banerjee had said that the Centre was behaving as a friend of CPM. The railways minister said that her party had worked with Congress in the Lok Sabha elections and it must repose faith in it and not the states CPM-led government.
Even as she expressed her unhappiness, Ms Banerjee also reiterated that the alliance with Congress would not be affected. Keeping the Congress-Trinamool alliance intact is crucial to Ms Banerjees plans to capture Writers Building in the 2011 assembly elections. The Trinamool chief would like to be seen as part of the effort that the Centre is making in restoring the situation to normalcy in the state. At the same time, Ms Banerjee is of the view that the state police is taking cover of the joint task force to target her party workers and hurt innocent civilians.
Ms Banerjee would like the Centre to declare West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia districts as disturbed areas and to initiate measures for restoring peace. She has also demanded operations by central security forces in areas like Arambagh, Garbeta and Keshpur, which are CPM strongholds.
