Dhaka agrees to joint verification of camps

After denying the presence of Indian insurgent groups on its soil all these years, Bangladesh has taken a step forward and offered a joint verification of the insurgent camps after their location is pinpointed by New Delhi.

The offer was made by BDR chief, Major Gen Shakil Ahmed, to BSF director general A K Mitra at the DG-level talks in Dhaka that ended on Sunday. During the deliberations, the Indian side handed over to Dhaka a list of 110 insurgent camps - of Ulfa, NDFB and other banned Indian outfits - operating from Bangladeshi territory, complete with their addresses.

Mr Mitra also presented Mr Ahmed with a list of 263 Bangladeshbased fugitives wanted for crimes in India. These include Ulfa commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah and his associates Anup Chetia and Arabinda Rajakhowa, besides top leadership of NDFB and Huji terrorists involved in terror attacks here. The Bangladeshi side more than matched up by seeking the handing over of 1,464 criminals allegedly hiding in India.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday on the outcome of the BSF-BDR talks, Mr Mitra said he had been assured by Dhaka that if the Indian side approached it with specific information about a camp running on Bangladeshi oil, a joint verification of the spot could be undertaken by BDR and BSF.

Although Dhakas offer of joint verification of Indias claims of insurgent camps on its soil marks a major climbdown from its complete denial so far of any insurgent activity directed at India, it is yet to be seen whether the neighbour actually goes the whole hog and undertakes a joint verification, that too immediately after the location is pointed out by the BSF authorities. Nevertheless, a lot of other crucial decisions were taken by the BDR and BSF DGs to strengthen patrolling and security at the Indo-Bangla border.
