Devendra Fadnavis slams Swami Narayan Temple authorities for discriminating against female journalists

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has slammed the Swami Narayan Temple authorities for discrimination against female journalists. On Thursday the Temple authorities in Dadar had stirred up a controversy after they disallowed female journalists from sitting in a press enclosure during a function that was organised to felicitate Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The female journalists were asked to sit in a different row behind as the Monks in the Swami Narayan sect follow a strict practice of celibacy. Fadnavis who was invited to the function by the Shree Santacruz Jain Tapagachh Sangh took the organizers to task in his speech. “We are in the 21st century. All such practices that discriminate against women should be stopped. A society progresses only when the women get the due respect. All such practices should be stopped.”said Fadnavis in his speech.

He repeated the comments while interacting with journalists after his speech.

Mumbai BJP Chief Ashish Shelar who was also present at the function also disapproved of the organizers of the conduct by saying, ‘ Such behavior cannot be supported’.

Fadnavis was attending the function as he was to be felicitated by the Shree Santacruz Jain Tapagachh Sangh for passing the bill banning cow slaughter.
