The verdict has been welcomed by Shiv Sena and BJP as well as the Uddhav group of Sena. The Uddhav group claimed the ruling that put a question mark on the then Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s decision to ask the then CM Uddhav Thackeray to take a floor test was a victory for them as it validated how their government was brought down.
“Today, the Supreme Court has exposed those seeking power... This is a fight and victory for democracy. The governor’s decision to call for a floor test has been called illegal, and his decisions have been questioned. If they have ethics and morals, then I want them not to cling to power and resign as I did and go for fresh elections in the state,” said Thackeray.
CM Eknath Shinde and deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the ruling calling it a vindication of the ‘legitimacy of their government’. “We are totally happy with the verdict; this is a total victory for democracy. The court has held that our government is constitutional,” said Fadnavis while addressing a joint press conference along with Shinde.
“The ruling today has poured cold water on those who were expecting the Supreme Court to reinstate Uddhav Thackeray as chief minister of the MVA. It has held that the governor was justified in calling for Shinde to form the government and said the Speaker would be the one to decide on the disqualification of MLAs,” Fadnavis said.
