AHMEDABAD: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday scoffed at the BJP for ‘hiding its ugly face of terror and terrorism behind the mask of development’ to garner votes.
“They try to address bogus issues to disillusion voters,” Ms Gandhi said without naming chief minister Narendra Modi over his speech on Sohrabuddin Sheikh’s encounter. Ms Gandhi attacked the BJP for accusing the Congress of going soft on terrorism and said, “it was the BJP that flew back terrorists to Afghanistan. How can they point fingers at us?”
Continuing her tirade against the BJP, Ms Gandhi said, “the BJP entered the election arena wearing a mask of development. As election process gathered pace, the mask was gone and the party’s real face of terror was out in public.”
“A Congress-led Gujarat government would carry out development in an atmosphere of peace and harmony,” she said. Ms Gandhi said Gujarat election symbolised the struggle of human virtues and went beyond Congress and BJP. “It is about selecting the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel,” Ms Gandhi said.
Mr Modi’s opponent in his constituency Maninagar, Dinsha Patel, sought the electorate bring Congress to power in Gujarat to bring an end to ‘Hitler’s regime.’
The event organised in the heart of Ahmedabad city at the Sardar Patel Stadium was meant to target the urban electorate.
The effort of the Congress to leave a lasting impression on the urban electorate before the second phase of polling on December 16 saw around 20,000 people turning up to listen to the star campaigner of the party. Ms Gandhi’s speech and acidic remarks on the BJP drew applause from the crowd.
