Developing nations to get assistance for carbon emmissions cut

NEW DELHI: Developed countries will provide financial support to developing nations for technology development and transfer to reduce carbon emissions under the new agreement reached at the Paris Climate Change summit, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

"Under the Paris Agreement adopted in December 2015, it has been agreed that developed countries will provide financial support to developing countries for strengthening cooperative action on technology development and transfer," Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said in a written reply.

He said developing countries, including India, were always proactive in negotiations for promoting and facilitating enhanced action on technology development and transfer.

"Accordingly, a technology framework has been established under the Paris agreement for the post 2020 period for collaborative approaches to research and development and facilitating access to technology and financial support to developing countries," the Union Minister said.

He said there are no statistics regarding the incremental cost of low carbon investments in developing countries as it will "depend on country strategies".

A landmark climate change deal was clinched with the approval of India, China and the US after days of tough negotiations in Paris with the legally-binding pact seeking to limit global warming to "well below" 2 degrees Celsius and committing USD 100 billion a year from 2020 to help developing nations.
