Detractors trying to frame Fatmi: Lalu

Darbhanga police is investigating the role of M A A Fatmi into a conspiracy to eliminate deputy mayor of city municipal corporation.

PATNA: Darbhanga police is investigating the role of Union minister of state for human resource development M A A Fatmi into a “conspiracy to eliminate” deputy mayor of city municipal corporation Badrujama alias Bobby Khan.

The minister, who represents Darbhanga Lok Sabha seat, has stoutly defended his alleged link to the plot, saying that his political detractors were behind spreading such rumours.

RJD president and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Yadav has also come out to defend his ministerial colleague by blaming the ruling Janata Dal (United) government to victimise its political adversaries by implicating them in “false cases”.

The RJD president has been busy garnering support for his upcoming ‘Chetawani Rally’ against Nitish Kumar government in the state by uniting all opposition leaders in Bihar.

Naming BJP MLC Sanjay Jha and former MP Kirti Azad as the two mastermind behind the plot to ‘frame’ Union minister Fatmi, the RJD president said the entire exercise also had the blessings of chief minister Nitish Kumar.

Responding to the allegations, BJP leader Sanjay Jha said it did not behove of Laluji to make such baseless remarks against him. “If some leader is hauled up for his past misdeeds, how come I should be held responsible for this? It is open to police investigation to ascertain the truth,” Mr Jha said, adding the Nitish-led NDA government was not engaged in shielding or implicating anyone.

Police officials said that recent arrest of six persons, including a ward councillor, had led to the disclosure that an alleged contract was given to get the deputy mayor murdered, with the approval of Mr Fatmi. The arrested ward councillor, Amanullah Khan, had made confessional statements before the executive magistrate of taking Rs 5 Lakh for the job.

Mr Fatmi is understood to have contacted the chief minister to explain how his name had surfaced in the case. Sources said the chief minister in turn assured him that nobody could be held guilty on the basis of statement. “I have spoken to the DGP to find out the facts,” Mr Kumar reportedly told the Union minister of state.
